Understanding the CMA 2022 Curriculum: A Guide to Your Accounting Career

Introduction

Thinking about becoming a Certified Management Accountant (CMA)? The CMA Syllabus for 2022, effective from June 2023, is designed to equip you with comprehensive knowledge in accounting and management. Let's break down what you'll study at each stage.

Foundation Course

This is where you start. The Foundation Course lays the groundwork with four papers:

  1. P1: Fundamentals of Business Laws and Business Communication (FBLC): Learn about basic business laws and how to communicate in the business world.
  2. P2: Fundamentals of Financial and Cost Accounting (FFCA): Understand the basics of handling company finances and cost accounting.
  3. P3: Fundamentals of Business Mathematics and Statistics (FBMS): Get to grips with the math and statistics used in business.
  4. P4: Fundamentals of Business Economics and Management (FBEM): Explore basic economics and the essentials of managing a business.
Intermediate Course

Next up is the Intermediate Course, which is divided into two groups with four papers each:

Group – I

  1. PAPER 5: Business Laws and Ethics (BLE)
  2. PAPER 6: Financial Accounting (FA)
  3. PAPER 7: Direct and Indirect Taxation (DITX)
  4. PAPER 8: Cost Accounting (CA)
Group – II
  1. PAPER 9: Operations Management and Strategic Management (OMSM)
  2. PAPER 10: Corporate Accounting and Auditing (CAA)
  3. PAPER 11: Financial Management and Business Data Analytics (FMDA)
  4. PAPER 12: Management Accounting (MA)
Final Course

The Final Course is the last step. Like the Intermediate, it's split into two groups, but with a twist at the end:

Group – III

  1. PAPER 13: Corporate and Economic Laws (CEL)
  2. PAPER 14: Strategic Financial Management (SFM)
  3. PAPER 15: Direct Tax Laws and International Taxation (DIT)
  4. PAPER 16: Strategic Cost Management (SCM)
Group – IV
  1. PAPER 17: Cost and Management Audit (CMAD)
  2. PAPER 18: Corporate Financial Reporting (CFR)
  3. PAPER 19: Indirect Tax Laws and Practice (ITLP)
  4. Elective Papers: You get to choose one of these:
    • P 20A: Strategic Performance Management and Business Valuation (SPMBV)
    • P 20B: Risk Management in Banking and Insurance (RMBI)
    • P 20C: Entrepreneurship and Startup (ENTS)
