CMA Course Details
By CMA Rohan Sharma · 8 min read
You have decided to pursue CMA. You have confirmed your eligibility. Now comes the most important first step that many students get wrong — the actual registration on the ICMAI portal. Students either miss the registration window, upload the wrong documents, pay fees for the wrong course, or register for Foundation when they are eligible for Direct Entry into Intermediate.
Getting the registration right the first time saves you months of delay. ICMAI's portal can feel confusing at first — there are different registration types, different fees for different routes, and several documents to prepare in the correct format.
This blog gives you the complete, step-by-step CMA course registration process for 2026 — covering Foundation, Intermediate (both routes), and Final — so you can complete your registration without any confusion or errors.
Registration is your first exam in the CMA journey. Students who do it carelessly — wrong documents, wrong fee, wrong level — end up losing months. Do it right, do it once.
To register for CMA online, visit icmai.in → Student Registration → choose your level (Foundation or Intermediate). Fill personal & academic details, upload documents (10th/12th/graduation marksheets, photo, signature, ID proof), and pay the registration fee online. Your Student Registration Number (SRN) is issued within 3–7 working days. Registration for Foundation costs approximately ₹4,000 and Intermediate approximately ₹6,000 (subject to revision).
Before opening the ICMAI portal, spend 20 minutes preparing the following. Students who go to the portal without documents ready often end up with an incomplete or rejected application.
There are two ways to enter CMA — through Foundation (for Class 12 pass students) or through Direct Entry (for graduates and CA/CS/ICWA qualified students who can skip Foundation and register directly for Intermediate). If you are a graduate, check the Direct Entry eligibility criteria before registering — you may not need to sit Foundation at all.
You will need all of these during the online registration session — the portal has a time limit and you cannot save a partial application in most cases:
| Item | Format Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Passport-size photograph | JPG, white background, under 100 KB | Recent, clear photo — same one used for ID documents |
| Specimen signature | JPG, white background, under 50 KB | Sign on white paper, scan or photograph clearly |
| Class 10 marksheet | PDF or JPG, under 200 KB | Required for date of birth verification |
| Class 12 marksheet | PDF or JPG, under 200 KB | Foundation and Intermediate both require this |
| Graduation marksheet/certificate | PDF or JPG, under 200 KB | Required for Direct Entry / Intermediate registration |
| Aadhaar Card or Passport | PDF or JPG, under 200 KB | For identity and address verification |
| Valid email ID and mobile number | Active, accessible | OTP verification during registration; all communications come here |
| Debit/Credit Card or Net Banking | — | For fee payment at the end of the registration process |
Follow these steps to register for CMA Foundation on the ICMAI portal:
Note: Foundation registration is valid for 3 years from the date of registration. You should clear all 4 Foundation papers within this period, otherwise you need to re-register.
Once you clear all four Foundation papers (or at least pass with your Foundation SRN), log back into the ICMAI portal and apply for Intermediate registration. Your Foundation passing details are already linked to your SRN, so the process is faster. You need to update your current address, upload graduation details if applicable, and pay the Intermediate registration fee. There is no separate eligibility check required since Foundation clearance is the gateway.
If you are a graduate eligible for Direct Entry, follow these additional steps during Intermediate registration:

ICMAI's fee structure covers registration, study material, and examination separately. You pay registration once (valid for a fixed period), then pay exam fees each time you fill an exam form. Here is the approximate fee structure — always verify the current rates on icmai.in as these are subject to periodic revision:
| Fee Component | Foundation | Intermediate | Final |
|---|---|---|---|
| Registration Fee | ~₹4,000 | ~₹6,000 | ~₹6,000 |
| Study Material (Physical) | Included / ~₹1,500 | ~₹2,500 | ~₹2,500 |
| Exam Fee (per paper, approx) | ~₹200 per paper | ~₹300–400 per paper | ~₹300–400 per paper |
| IT Training (Direct Entry only) | Not applicable | ~₹3,000–4,000 | Not applicable |
| Practical Training Registration | Not applicable | Register during Intermediate | Mandatory before Final exams |
| Registration Validity | 3 years | 5 years (extendable) | 5 years (extendable) |
Note: Fees shown are approximate and may have changed. SC/ST/PWD candidates get concessions on registration fees. Check icmai.in for the current official fee schedule before making any payment.
Based on what students frequently get wrong, here are the most common registration errors — and the simple fix for each:
| Mistake | Why It Happens | How to Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Registering for Foundation when eligible for Direct Entry | Student does not check eligibility carefully | Read the Direct Entry eligibility page on icmai.in before registering. Graduates with a Bachelor's degree can skip Foundation entirely. |
| Name mismatch between documents and registration form | Typing a short form of name, or using a different spelling | Enter your name EXACTLY as it appears on your Class 10 certificate — including middle name, if any. ICMAI matches the name on your admit card with your ID document at the exam centre. |
| Uploading oversized files | Photo or document files exceed portal size limit | Compress images before uploading. Free tools like ilovepdf.com or tinypng.com reduce file size without losing quality. |
| Using an email ID you rarely check | Student creates a new email just for registration | Use your primary, regularly-checked email. All exam updates, result notifications, and admit card links come here. Missing a single email can mean missing an exam window. |
| Not saving the payment confirmation | Student closes the browser after payment | Screenshot or PDF the payment confirmation page and save your transaction reference number. This is proof of payment if your application shows a technical error. |
| Delaying Practical Training registration | Student thinks PT can be done "after Intermediate" | Register for Practical Training immediately after clearing CMA Intermediate. You must complete at least 6 months of PT before you can appear for the CMA Final exams. |
For CMA Students Who Want to Get Placed Fast
Master costing concepts, financial ratios, SAP basics, and HR questions — everything companies ask CMA freshers in their first interview rounds.
Explore the Course →To register for CMA Foundation, go to icmai.in, click on 'Student Registration', select 'Foundation Course', fill in your personal and academic details, upload required documents (Class 10 and 12 marksheets, photo, signature, ID proof), and pay the registration fee online. You will receive your Student Registration Number (SRN) by email. Registration is valid for 3 years.
The CMA Intermediate registration fee is approximately ₹6,000 for Indian students (subject to revision by ICMAI). This is separate from the exam fee and study material charges. Direct Entry students pay the same registration fee but are exempt from Foundation. Always check the current fee structure on icmai.in as fees may be revised.
Yes. Graduates with a Bachelor's degree in any stream (with at least 55% marks in case of non-commerce graduates, or a pass for commerce graduates) can register directly for CMA Intermediate under the Direct Entry Scheme, bypassing Foundation. You will need to register for and complete a 100-hour IT training and 50-hour orientation programme before your first exam.
CMA registration on the ICMAI portal is processed digitally and your Student Registration Number (SRN) is usually issued within 3–7 working days after successful submission and payment. Physical study materials (if opted for) are dispatched separately. You can track your registration status on the ICMAI member portal.
For CMA Foundation registration you need: Class 10 marksheet, Class 12 marksheet, passport-size photo (white background), specimen signature, and Aadhaar or any government ID proof. For Intermediate, additionally provide your graduation marksheet or degree certificate. Documents must be uploaded in the specified format (usually JPG/PDF, under 200 KB).
Registration is the first administrative hurdle in your CMA journey — and it is a surprisingly common place where students lose time. A name mismatch, a document not matching, a missed IT Training deadline — any of these can push your first exam window back by 6 months. The stakes are real.
Treat the registration process with the same seriousness you give to exam preparation. Prepare your documents in advance, choose the right entry route, double-check every field before submitting, and save every receipt and reference number you receive. Once your SRN is in your inbox, the real journey begins — and that is the exciting part.
You are one online form away from officially being a CMA student. Do it right — do it today.
