CMA Practical Training Rules 2026 – 15-Month Requirement Explained Simply

By CMA Rohan Sharma  ·  {{DATE}}  ·  10 min read

Quick Answer: ICMAI requires 15 months of practical training before you can apply for ACMA membership. This is fulfilled through a combination of articleship (3 months under a practising CMA with CoP) and industrial training (12 months in a qualifying company), or 15 months of industrial training. Training must be formally registered with ICMAI — unregistered work experience does not count.

The CMA practical training requirement is one of the most misunderstood aspects of the path to ACMA membership. Students confuse articleship with industrial training, don't realise when training can begin, or discover too late that their work experience doesn't count because it wasn't registered. This guide explains the rules clearly — so you can plan your training strategically, avoid delays, and reach ACMA membership on time.

Always Verify with ICMAI: Training rules are updated periodically. This guide reflects our understanding of current ICMAI requirements as of 2026. Before making any training decisions, verify the current rules at icmai.in or contact your regional ICMAI office.

The 15-Month Requirement — Overview

To apply for ACMA (Associate Membership of ICMAI), you must complete two things: (1) pass CMA Final (both groups), and (2) complete 15 months of prescribed practical training. These two requirements are independent — you can complete one before the other, but both must be satisfied before membership application.

RequirementDetailsMust be done before...
CMA Final — Both GroupsPass all 8 papers (4 in Group III, 4 in Group IV) of CMA FinalMembership application
15-Month Practical TrainingFormally registered training — articleship + industrial or industrial training onlyMembership application
Eligible to start trainingAfter CMA Intermediate (both groups) is clearedTraining registration

Many students clear their CMA Final and then discover their training either wasn't registered or their company didn't qualify. This is avoidable with 30 minutes of research at the start of training.

Training Routes — Which Applies to You?

The 15-month training requirement can be fulfilled in different combinations. The most common is Route A.

RouteBreakdownBest For
Route A (Most Common)3 months Articleship (under practising CMA with CoP) + 12 months Industrial Training (in qualifying company)Students who want a mix of practice firm and corporate experience
Route B15 months Industrial Training only (in qualifying company)Students who secure a good corporate training placement and don't need articleship; or where the training establishment can accommodate the full 15 months
Route C (Working Professionals)Registration of current employment as training (subject to ICMAI approval of company and role)Professionals already working in qualifying companies in relevant roles; requires formal registration
03

Which Companies Qualify for Industrial Training?

This is the most critical and most misunderstood part of the training rules. Not every company qualifies. The company must maintain statutory cost records under the Companies (Cost Records and Audit) Rules 2014.

Categories of Companies That Generally Qualify

SectorExamplesApproximate Turnover Threshold for Cost Records
Regulated Industries (lower threshold)Pharmaceuticals, fertilisers, sugar, industrial alcohol, petroleum products, electricity, roads, railways, telecommunicationsGenerally Rs 35 crore+ turnover triggers cost records requirement
Non-regulated / Other ManufacturingSteel, cement, chemicals, auto components, textiles, tyres, paper, glass, mechanical engineeringGenerally Rs 35–100 crore+ depending on specific sub-category; verify exact threshold
MiningCoal, iron ore, bauxite, other mineral extraction companiesVarious thresholds per Rules
Infrastructure / ConstructionCompanies in roads, bridges, ports, airports constructionPer Cost Records Rules for infrastructure sector

Companies That Generally Do NOT Qualify

  • Pure IT / software services companies (no manufacturing)
  • Trading companies (buy and sell without manufacturing)
  • Pure financial services (banks, NBFCs, insurance — unless they have qualifying subsidiaries)
  • Retail companies
  • Government ministries and departments (as opposed to government companies / PSUs)
  • Companies below the turnover threshold for cost records
How to Verify: Before accepting a training placement, ask the company's finance team: "Do you maintain cost records under the Companies (Cost Records and Audit) Rules 2014?" and "Are you registered as a training establishment with ICMAI?" If the answer to either is unclear, contact ICMAI's regional office for verification before joining.

How to Register Training with ICMAI

1
Secure Your Training Placement
Get an offer letter from the training establishment (company or CMA firm). Ensure the company/firm qualifies before accepting.
2
Download the Correct Form
Log in to icmai.in. For articleship: Form T-3 (or current equivalent). For industrial training: Form T-4 (or current equivalent). Use only the current version of the form — outdated versions are rejected.
3
Complete the Form and Get Signatures
Fill in your student details, training establishment details, supervisor's ICMAI membership number, training commencement date. Get the form signed by your training supervisor (practising CMA for articleship; CMA member/Finance Head for industrial training).
4
Submit to ICMAI
Submit the completed form through the ICMAI student portal (preferred) or to your regional ICMAI office within the prescribed timeframe from training commencement (typically within 30–60 days of starting). Pay any applicable registration fee.
5
Receive Acknowledgment and Maintain Records
ICMAI issues a training registration acknowledgment. Keep this document. Maintain your training log/diary throughout the period. At the end of training, submit the training completion report signed by your supervisor.

Working Professionals and Prior Experience

Two of the most common questions from working professionals pursuing CMA:

Can my current job count as training?

Yes, if your current employer qualifies as a training establishment and you formally register the arrangement with ICMAI. The registration must happen prospectively — you cannot register training retroactively for periods that have already passed without prior registration. If you are currently working in a manufacturing company, pharma company, or PSU in a finance/costing role, you may be able to register your employment as training going forward.

Does past work experience count?

Generally, no — unregistered prior work experience does not count toward the 15-month training requirement, even if the company qualifies and the work was in a relevant finance role. ICMAI has provisions for experienced professionals in some cases, but these are assessed individually. Contact ICMAI's membership department with your specific situation for guidance.

SituationDoes It Count?Action Required
Currently working in a qualifying company, not registered as trainingGoing forward: Yes, if registered now. Past months: Generally No.Register your employment as training with ICMAI immediately
Worked in a qualifying company in the past (before CMA registration or without training registration)Generally NoConsult ICMAI membership cell for any applicable exemption provisions
Working in a non-qualifying company (IT firm, trading company, etc.)NoYou need to find a qualifying training placement separately
Registered training at a qualifying company that you've been doing for the past 6 monthsYes — registered months countContinue training and submit completion report at end
07

What Happens If You Don't Complete Training?

There are no exam-related penalties for not completing training — you can sit for and pass CMA Final without completing training. The consequence is singular: you cannot apply for ACMA membership until training is complete.

This matters because:

  • You cannot use "ACMA" after your name on your resume, business card, or LinkedIn profile until membership is granted
  • You cannot apply for positions that require ACMA membership as a mandatory qualification
  • Campus placement through ICMAI requires Final clearance — training completion requirements vary by placement type
  • PSU recruitment via ICMAI campus often requires or strongly prefers ACMA membership

The longer you delay starting training, the longer you delay ACMA — and ACMA is the qualification that unlocks the salary premium and the designation-level roles.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I start CMA practical training?
You can begin practical training after passing the CMA Intermediate examination (both groups). You cannot start training before clearing Intermediate. Check current ICMAI guidelines as provisions may have been updated.
Can I do CMA practical training while still appearing for CMA Final exams?
Yes — practical training and CMA Final exam preparation can run concurrently. Many students begin training after clearing Intermediate and appear for Final exams while training. There is no requirement to complete Final before starting training.
Does working in a finance job before CMA count as practical training?
Not automatically. Work experience counts only if it was formally registered as training with ICMAI before or shortly after it commenced. Unregistered work experience — even in an eligible company doing cost accounting — does not count toward the 15-month requirement.
Do working professionals need to do practical training to become ACMA?
ICMAI has provisions for working professionals — those working in relevant industries may be able to register their current employment as practical training if it meets the eligibility criteria. Consult ICMAI's current rules for working professional exemptions as they are updated periodically.
What happens if I complete CMA Final but haven't finished training?
You can appear for and pass CMA Final exams without completing training. However, you cannot apply for ACMA membership until the 15-month training requirement is fulfilled. Many students clear Finals and then complete their training — the training requirement is separate from exam clearance.
How do I register my training with ICMAI?
Submit the relevant training registration form (T-3 for articleship, T-4 for industrial training) through the ICMAI student portal (icmai.in) before or within the prescribed timeframe after training commencement. You'll need the training establishment's details, your Intermediate pass certificate, and the training offer/appointment letter.
What are the consequences of not completing practical training before applying for ACMA membership?
You simply cannot apply for membership until training is complete. There is no penalty for delayed training completion, but your ACMA designation is delayed for every month training remains incomplete — and ACMA unlocks salary premiums, designation-level roles, and PSU campus placement opportunities.
Can I do training in a company where I am already employed?
Yes, if the company qualifies as a training establishment under ICMAI rules. Register the arrangement with ICMAI properly. Your role should involve cost accounting, finance, or management accounting work for the training to be substantively meaningful.
What if my training period has a gap — will those months be lost?
Months actually served and registered count; gap months between training periods do not. If you take a break between articleship and industrial training, the gap is not counted. Resume your training registration with a new establishment and continue accumulating months toward the 15-month total.
Do IT companies or service sector companies qualify for CMA industrial training?
Typically not — the industrial training requirement is tied to companies maintaining statutory cost records, which are primarily in manufacturing, mining, power, petroleum, and specified service sectors. Pure IT or software services companies generally do not qualify. Check with ICMAI for exceptions in specific categories.

Final Advice from Rohan Bhaiya

The 15-month CMA practical training requirement exists for a reason: cost accounting and management accounting cannot be learned entirely in a classroom. The practical component is what bridges the gap between syllabus knowledge and real-world application.

Follow the rules correctly, document your work from the start, and treat the training certificate as an important professional credential. ICMAI takes violations of training norms seriously, and gaps or discrepancies can delay your membership. Career Success Launchpad can help you navigate the training period and come out ready for a strong start in your career.
